Distribution of District Funding

Distribution of District Funding

The approximately $21 million in revenue collected is divided into two pieces:

  • $12.3 million is the continuation of property taxes that came into being when the District was formed – and it is divided into two further parts.

    • Approximately $6 to $7 million per year is used for the community benefit program within the District.

    • The remainder is held for capital expenditures for the El Camino Hospital Mountain View campus.

  • $8.8 million to support the debt service of $148 million of General Obligation Bonds approved by the taxpayers in an election in 2003.

Financial Assistance (Charity Care) & Overall Community Benefit

Six to seven million of Community Benefit Grants is a large sum, however it is only a fraction of the total Community Benefit. The total is $42 million – 6% of the Hospital’s total expenditures when combined with charity care and unreimbursed costs of Medi-Cal services.

Although the Hospital collects $16 million in revenues from Medi-Cal, it costs the Hospital more than $40 million to provide those related services. This calculates into a community benefit of nearly $22 million for the unreimbursed cost of Medi-Cal services.

There are also other medical services (e.g. behavioral health, cardiac rehab) that are needed in the community but which the Hospital receives less than what it costs to provide them. Like most hospitals, the Hospital accounts for these losses as part of their Community Benefit.
